Lights in the harbour

Imagine a busy industrial harbour served by an extensive 2ft gauge light railway with a variety of freight and passenger trains. That's exactly what Martin Coombs did when he created his 'O-16.5' gauge 'Whiteoak Light Railway'. This 7mm:1ft scale narrow gauge layout has delighted exhibitions-goers since 2003, with its carefully positioned buildings and industrial features.

The locomotives and rolling stock are high on the list of the layout's main attractions, although Martin has great affection from commercially available items such as Bachmann's 'On30' locomotives and railcars. Models based on US prototypes have been 'anglicised' and given realistic weathering jobs.

Martin estimates that, from inception, it took around 15 years to complete the layout, however he freely admits "there were long periods where nothing happened." All-in-all "there was about a year's worth of actual work in the layout."
