Having been impressed by a new design for privately owned coke hoppers in the 1930s, the LMS decided to order 200 similar wagons. Coke is lighter than coal, therefore the new hopper vehicles were longer and taller than typical contemporary coal wagons, allowing for greater efficiencies in transportation.


BR built a slightly revised version of the LMS design over several batches, each with slight variations. Some 2,000 were built and they lasted into the 1980s and some were modified to carry other commodities, such as chalk or sand...
