Model Rail Inspirational Breaks

A unique chance to get away for a weekend with like-minded people (groups limited to between 20-50 people) to completely immerse yourself in Britain’s most inspirational railways. Go behind the scenes and get close to everything you need to make your models perfect.

To launch Model Rail Inspirational Breaks, we’ve put together a weekend in the heart of Great Western Railway country to celebrate the brilliance of Brunel, Churchward and Collett. See the most famous GWR locomotives, explore genuine GWR buildings and experience what the beautiful Vale of White Horse looked like in the 1930s.

What’s included:

  • Two nights half board accommodation at the Double Tree Hilton Newbury North (Junction 13, M4) with access to the leisure centre and facilities
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Behind the scenes access to all the attractions
  • Luxury coach transfers to attractions on Saturday and Sunday

Friday 23rd March

  • 3pm - Arrive at the hotel. Take advantage of the leisure centre and facilities and meet the group
  • 6pm – Join the Model Rail team and your fellow group for a welcome drink before dinner
  • 6.30pm – Three course meal followed by a talk from Model Rail’s founding editor Chris Leigh,  ‘50 years in Modelling Media’

Saturday 24th March            

  • Breakfast
     
  • 9.30am – Coach transfer to Didcot Railway Centre, home of the Great Western Society. Immerse yourself in the world of the GWR steam depot, access to the historic 1932 shed PLUS exclusive access on to the restored branch line, replica broad gauge railway and inside the GWS’ two restored signalboxes
     
  • See the GWS’ locomotive workshops, carriage storage area and see inside some carriages normally inaccessible to the public
     
  • Your chance to measure and photograph GWR locomotives, rolling stock and buildings like never before
     
  • Explore the architectural salvage yard to see what historical gems were unearthed during the construction of Crossrail and the recent reconstruction of Reading station
     
  • One of the GWS’ unique collection of GWR locomotives will be in steam, hauling private trains on Didcot’s main demonstration line
     
  • Two course lunch and drink will be provided
     
  • 2.30pm – Coach transfer to Pendon Museum. A must for any modeller, Britain’s premier model landscape museum will be kept open late just for this tour
     
  • Enjoy the superlative model making from Britain’s most talented modellers and find out how the epic ‘Vale Scene’, which takes you back to rural Vale of the White Horse before the Second World War, was built
     
  • 5.30pm – Coach transfer back to the hotel
     
  • 7pm – Three course dinner with the group and social evening

Sunday 25th March                           

  • Breakfast
     
  • 9.30am – Coach transfer to STEAM-Museum of the Great Western Railway
     
  • See the pride of the GWR’s locomotive fleet - King George V, Caerphilly Castle and City of Truro on the site where they were built, the GWR’s spiritual home of Swindon Works
     
  • Get close – and even handle – some of STEAM’s smaller historical relics
     
  • Buffet lunch
     
  • Go on a tour of Swindon’s Railway Village – designed by Brunel – with an expert historian
     
  • Enjoy a special tour to explore the story of GWR and Swindon at the Railway Village. This isn’t part of the normal program and gives an excellent insight into the lives of GWR workers
     
  • 3pm – Coach transfer back to the hotel
