One of the stars of Model Rail’s June issue is ‘Cley-on-Sea’, a fabulous room-filling ‘OO’ gauge layout by Russ Pigott. Based on the premise that a once-prosperous port on the East Anglian coast, which fell out of use in the 1700s, was instead developed into a major source of traffic for the railway. Although fictional, the layout features many recognisable nods to the region, with a terminus station that resembles Norwich Thorpe, and a stretch of the Norfolk Broads spanned by an archetypal swing bridge. Together with a host of vernacular architectural styles, the layout makes for a hugely convincing composition.

For history buffs, we take a deep dive into the story behind Drummond’s almost-forgotten – and capricious – ‘T14’ 4-6-0s, nicknamed ‘Paddle Steamers’ due to their unusual appearance, while Alex Rockey combines 3D printing with some good old-fashioned cut-and-shut work to create an attractive miniature replica.

Along with details of Bachmann’s all-new ‘OO’ Class 66 project, we also feature developments in ‘TT:120’ from Hornby and Heljan, while running the rule over new model releases, including Dapol’s hugely impressive ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0ST and Hornby’s hotly anticipated Class 755 ‘FLIRT’ units… and a tasty array of Irish wagons too.

It's all in the latest issue of Model Rail, on sale now!
